About
The Winton Fine Wool Stud was founded in 1835 by David Taylor of Winton with sheep imported from Saxony by the Forlong Family.

Saxon rams imported by Captain Bell were used and later a major portion of the Saxon flock of Richard Willis of
Wanstead Park were added.

These Saxon sheep were descended from the original gift of sheep from the Spanish Royal Flock to the Elector of Saxony in 1765.

Stud sheep were purchased at the dispersal of St Johnstone in 1917, Belle Vue in 1928, Stewarton in 1934 and later from Valleyfield which made a significant contribution to the Winton Stud.
Winton Saxon Stud rams have been sold widely including exports to South Africa, France, New Zealand and throughout Australia.
Recently semen has been sold to the United States and New Zealand.

The Taylor family is dedicated to the preservation of this historic and unique strain of fine wool sheep.

Winton Stud
Our Passion
As the sole remaining parent stud for pure Saxon genetics we are passionate to carry on the tradition to preserve these sheep that produce such a special fibre. It would be fair to say many Super Fine Flocks in Australia would have some Winton Stud blood in their breeding either directly or through daughter studs.

The Winton Fine Wool Stud is the oldest Saxon Stud in Australia established in 1835.
and
Is the oldest continuing, family operated stud of Saxon Merinos in the world.
Winton Saxon Stud Families
The majority of the Saxon sheep at Winton are descended from the Belle Vue foundation sire Sir Thomas.
The Scone ram Royal Hero was an influential sire in the late 1800s, from which two main families Mastery and Mascot rams are descended.
The Belle Vue ram President was possibly the most influential sire from which two main family branches are directly descended firstly the Sir James family and secondly the half-brothers Baldwin and Triumph who were both by the stud ram Conservative VIII.

The Grubb family were descended from the ram Lord Steiger from the Steiger Stud in Saxony imported to the Bengeo Stud owned by P.B. Grubb.

The two main Baldwin stud families are descended from the rams JT198 and JT09. The Basher and Broken Leg lines are descended through the JT198 branch.

Mountain Grubb line is descended from the Valleyfield ram Mountain Stagg which goes back to Winton stud ram Monkton JT478.

Sierra Park ram SP40 was purchased in 2011 and was descended from the Mount Gow line.
